How to write a Physician Assistant (PA-C) resume

Lead with your clinical setting

Put your current PA title, specialty, and care setting at the top of your experience section. Urgent care, emergency medicine, primary care, and inpatient work involve different patient flow and procedures, so make the relevant setting easy to spot. If you have worked across settings, give each role its own entry and use the first bullet to show the patient mix or visit volume.

Show your clinical decisions

Write bullets that connect the complaint or clinical task to your assessment, action, and follow-up. Include realistic volume, procedure counts, turnaround time, or referral coordination when you can support the number. Describe your work within your actual practice agreement and employer protocols; avoid implying that you independently performed duties that required consultation or authorization.

Make credentials easy to verify

List PA-C and the state license relevant to the position in a clearly labeled credentials section, and use the exact names shown by the certifying or licensing bodies. Keep certification current in your resume and application materials. State licensing and prescribing requirements vary, so list additional state licenses only when held and mention specialty certificates only if they are current and relevant.

Name the tools you used

Include the EHR, point-of-care testing, and imaging systems you have actually used when they match the job posting. Put procedures such as suturing, splinting, or joint injections in a skills section only if you are trained and experienced in them. Leave out patient identifiers, unsupported outcome claims, and long lists of routine duties that do not show your clinical contribution.

Questions about this role

How long should a Physician Assistant resume be?

For a PA with several years of experience, one or two pages is usually practical. Use one page if your clinical history is short and relevant; use a second page for additional specialties, procedures, quality work, teaching, or publications that matter to the role. Keep recent clinical experience prominent and trim older or unrelated jobs before shrinking the type.

Should I include my PA-C certification and state license?

Yes. List your PA-C designation and issuing organization, NCCPA, along with the state PA license relevant to the position. Keep the status accurate and current. State licensing, title, and prescribing rules vary, so follow the wording used by the applicable licensing authority and employer. Do not include a license or certification you do not currently hold.

Can I move into a new specialty as a PA?

Yes. Emphasize transferable clinical work such as history and exam, differential diagnosis, procedures, patient education, and coordination of care, then connect it to the target specialty. Include relevant rotations, continuing education, or supervised experience when applicable. Be clear about your level of experience with specialty-specific procedures and avoid presenting coursework as independent clinical practice.

Which PA certifications should I list?

List current NCCPA PA-C certification and any additional credential that is current and relevant to the job, such as an NCCPA Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ). Add credentials such as BLS or ACLS when they are requested or customary for the setting, using the issuing organization's exact credential name and current status. Requirements can differ by employer and specialty.
