How to write a VP of Operations resume

Lead with operating scope

Put your current executive role first, followed by a short summary that names the business setting, operating footprint, and scale of responsibility. State the budget, sites, regions, product or service model, and functions you oversee when those details are relevant and can be shared. A hiring team should be able to distinguish company-wide leadership from responsibility for one facility.

Tie changes to business measures

Show the starting point, the operational decision, and the outcome in each bullet. Use measures such as operating expense, inventory dollars, forecast accuracy, order fulfillment, delivery performance, or cycle time, and include the period measured when useful. Explain your role in the result; avoid claiming a company-wide gain if the change applied only to one site or team.

Show financial ownership clearly

Describe how you set budgets, reviewed forecasts, managed capital spending, or addressed cost variances, and give a scale only when it is accurate and appropriate to disclose. Pair financial scope with operating outcomes such as service, quality, or working capital. Do not present the full company revenue as your own P&L if you owned only an operations budget.

Name systems and methods in context

List ERP platforms, planning processes, and improvement methods you have actually used, then connect them to a change you led. Mention a Six Sigma belt only if you earned it and can name the correct level; it is not a universal requirement for operations executives. Leave out long software inventories, confidential vendor terms, and generic leadership claims without evidence.

Questions about this role

How long should a VP of Operations resume be?

Two pages is a practical target for many experienced operations executives, though three pages can make sense when a long, relevant record needs room. Give the most space to recent roles and outcomes that match the job. Earlier positions can be condensed, and details unrelated to operations leadership can usually be removed.

Should I include budget or P&L figures?

Include the operating budget or P&L scope you directly owned when disclosure is allowed and the figure helps establish scale. Label it accurately: an operations budget is different from full business P&L responsibility. If the number is confidential, use a truthful range or describe the scope without a dollar amount.

Do VP of Operations jobs require an MBA or certification?

There is no single US-wide license or certification required for VP of Operations roles. Employers set their own education and experience preferences; some value an MBA, engineering or operations degree, or credentials such as APICS CSCP or a Six Sigma certification. List only credentials you hold, with the exact name and issuing organization.

How can I move into operations leadership from another function?

Show the operating responsibilities you have already owned, such as supply planning, fulfillment, procurement, manufacturing, or service delivery, and quantify the results. Make cross-functional scope clear and explain how your work affected cost, quality, inventory, or customer service. If you have not held a VP title, use your actual title and demonstrate readiness through the scale and outcomes of your work.
