How to write a Senior Financial Analyst resume

Lead with planning scope

Put your current title, employer, dates, and a short summary near the top. In the summary, identify the business setting and the planning work you own, such as an annual budget, monthly forecast, or a set of business units. This helps hiring managers distinguish enterprise planning experience from project-only analysis.

Show the decision behind the model

For each forecast, variance review, or investment analysis, name the business question, the method or data used, and what changed afterward. Use figures such as budget size, forecast cycle time, cost variance, or project value when you can support them. Avoid listing model types without showing how leaders used the analysis.

Name systems you can use

Include the finance and reporting tools you have used hands-on, such as Excel, an ERP, a planning platform, or a business intelligence tool. Match the wording in the job ad when it accurately describes your experience. Separate advanced functions you can demonstrate from tools you have only encountered, and leave out generic office software.

Keep credentials in context

A CFA, CPA, or CMA can help for some analyst roles, but none is a universal requirement for Senior Financial Analyst jobs. List only credentials you hold, and label an exam or designation as in progress if that is accurate. If the role emphasizes forecasting or reporting, give relevant work examples and systems more space than unrelated certifications.

Questions about this role

How long should a Senior Financial Analyst resume be?

For a candidate with several years of relevant experience, one or two pages is reasonable. Use one page if you can show the most relevant planning, analysis, tools, and results clearly. A second page is useful when it adds substantial role-related experience or projects; trim older or repetitive duties rather than shrinking the type.

Do I need a CFA, CPA, or CMA for this role?

Usually, no single certification is required across Senior Financial Analyst roles. Employers may prefer a CFA, CPA, or CMA for particular teams or responsibilities, while others focus on financial planning, modeling, and systems experience. Check the specific posting, list only credentials you have earned, and clearly label any program or exam that is still in progress.

How can I move into this role from accounting?

Emphasize accounting work that supports decisions, such as explaining budget variances, building forecasts, analyzing margins, or advising budget owners. Add examples that show how you used actuals and assumptions to recommend a next step. If you have done planning projects alongside close duties, describe their scope and results so the resume shows analytical work as well as accurate reporting.

Should I include a financial model or portfolio link?

A link can help when you have a polished, relevant work sample and can share it without violating confidentiality. Use a sanitized example with fictional or public data, and explain the question the model answers. Do not upload employer-owned forecasts, customer data, or internal reports. For many roles, concise resume bullets about the model and its business use are enough.
