How to write a Investment Banking Associate resume

Lead with deal experience

Place experience and education near the top, then make the first bullets show the transactions most relevant to the role. State deal type, approximate value or range, and your specific contribution, such as building a valuation case or coordinating diligence. Use confidential or anonymized descriptions when client names cannot be disclosed, and avoid implying sole responsibility for a team outcome.

Show analytical ownership

For each modeling bullet, identify the analysis and the decision it supported: DCF, trading comparables, precedent transactions, merger analysis or LBO scenarios. Include the company or deal context where disclosure permits, plus a modest scale measure such as number of assignments or valuation range. Explain how the work informed pricing, financing or client discussions instead of listing models without their use.

Describe execution clearly

Associates are expected to coordinate work and review analyst output, so include examples of managing diligence requests, tracking open items, preparing client materials and checking assumptions. Quantify workload with a credible count of workstreams, requests or assignments, and connect it to a practical result such as keeping materials current or meeting a transaction milestone. Do not claim to have closed a deal single-handedly.

List licenses accurately

List your finance degree and graduation date; an MBA is common on some associate paths, but is not a universal requirement. Include Series 79 and SIE status only as accurately recorded: FINRA registration depends on applicable activities, firm sponsorship and the registration process. Distinguish exams passed from active registration, and omit expired or unrelated credentials.

Questions about this role

How long should an investment banking associate resume be?

For an associate with a few years of experience, one page is a useful target if it leaves room for clear transaction bullets and education. A second page can make sense for a longer career or substantial relevant experience, but avoid filling it with coursework or repetitive deal descriptions. Keep the most relevant transactions and responsibilities near the top.

Should I include deal names and transaction values?

Include transaction type, approximate size, your role and outcome when your firm’s confidentiality rules allow it. If a client or deal is not public, describe it anonymously by sector and transaction type, or use a reasonable value range if permitted. Never disclose nonpublic client information, and avoid claiming credit for decisions or results owned by the broader deal team.

Do investment banking associates need a Series 79?

For registration as an Investment Banking Representative, FINRA requires passing both the Series 79 and the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) exam. The firm manages the registration process, and the applicable requirements depend on the work performed. Passing an exam is not the same as holding active registration. State exam and registration status accurately, and confirm the wording with your compliance team. [FINRA Series 79 guidance](https://www.finra.org/sites/default/files/Series_79_Content_Outline.pdf).

Can I move into investment banking from another finance role?

Yes, but make the transfer of skills concrete. Lead with transaction exposure, valuation work, financial modeling, diligence, capital raising or client materials from your prior role, and describe how your work supported a financing or investment decision. An MBA is common for some associate recruiting paths, while other firms promote analysts or consider experienced lateral candidates; requirements vary by firm and group.
