How to write a University Lecturer resume

Lead with teaching experience

For lecturer and adjunct searches, place teaching experience near the top, especially if it shows you were instructor of record. List course names and levels, terms taught, enrollment, and whether you built the syllabus, led labs, or coordinated multiple sections. If your CV also includes research, service, or publications, keep those sections but order them to match the position’s teaching emphasis.

Show the scope and effect

Use bullets to connect an instructional change to evidence: course redesign to learning outcomes, a new lab activity to practical scores, or advising to student progress. Give context such as section count, enrollment, course level, and delivery format so a committee can judge the work. Use figures you can explain and compare fairly; do not claim that a change caused an outcome when other factors may have contributed.

Present credentials in context

List the graduate degree relevant to the subject you teach, followed by any field-specific license or certification the posting requires. Requirements vary by discipline and institution; many lecturer openings ask for a master’s degree, while some require a doctorate or professional credential. Name the credential and issuing body accurately, and include dates only when the credential has an expiration or the employer requests them.

Keep evidence ready to share

Follow the posting’s requested document list and use a CV for academic roles when requested. A teaching portfolio can support your application with a teaching statement, sample syllabus, and selected assignment or evaluation evidence; link it only if the employer accepts links. Remove student names and identifying information from examples, and leave out raw evaluation comments or unrelated personal details.

Questions about this role

How long should a University Lecturer CV be?

There is no single page limit for an academic CV. Include the teaching, education, service, and scholarship details relevant to the role, while following any length or format instructions in the posting. For an early-career lecturer, a focused CV may be relatively short; avoid padding it with unrelated work or repetitive course descriptions.

Do I need a Ph.D. to become a university lecturer?

Not always. Requirements depend on the discipline, institution, and appointment. Some lecturer openings accept a relevant master’s degree and college teaching experience; others require a doctorate, professional qualification, or substantial applied experience. Check the specific posting and list the degree and teaching evidence that meet its stated requirements.

Should I include student evaluation scores on my CV?

You can summarize evaluation results if the institution permits their use and you can explain the measure, scale, response rate, and time period. Avoid presenting a score without context or selecting only favorable comments. Some employers request evaluations or a teaching portfolio separately, so follow their instructions and remove student identifying information from any materials you share.

What should I include in a teaching portfolio?

When requested, a portfolio may include a teaching statement, sample syllabus, assignment or lesson materials, and selected evidence of student learning or teaching evaluations. Choose examples that fit the courses and student population in the posting, and briefly explain your role and what each item demonstrates. Follow the employer’s format and privacy requirements; not every search asks for a portfolio.
