Summary

Senior mechanical engineer with 8 years of experience designing industrial pump assemblies and production equipment. Skilled in SolidWorks, tolerance analysis, and design verification, with a record of reducing assembly rework and supporting launches from prototype through production. Experienced in cross-functional design reviews and supplier handoffs.

Experience

Senior Mechanical Engineer at Redstone Pump Systems, Denver, CO (2022 – Present) - Redesigned a pump housing in SolidWorks and reviewed critical fits with GD&T, reducing machining rework from 9 units to 5 per quarter. - Built an ANSYS Mechanical model and correlated it with pressure-cycle tests, helping the team resolve a housing fatigue issue before a 40-unit pilot build. - Standardized design review and release checklists with manufacturing and quality, cutting average drawing release time from 12 business days to 9. Mechanical Engineer at Summit Flow Equipment, Fort Collins, CO (2018 – 2022) - Updated impeller and shaft interfaces using tolerance stackups and supplier feedback, reducing assembly adjustments by about 2 hours per unit across a 25-unit build. - Planned prototype fit and pressure tests with technicians, documenting findings that closed 14 design issues before production release.

How to write a Senior Mechanical Engineer resume

Lead with product ownership

Put your current product area and level of ownership near the top of the experience section. Name the assemblies, machines, or systems you designed and whether you owned requirements, detailed design, validation, or release. Senior resumes should show decisions across a product lifecycle, not only a list of CAD tasks.

Quantify engineering outcomes

Use numbers tied to mechanical work: parts per build, rework hours, scrap, cycle time, weight, cost, test cycles, or release time. Give a baseline and a result when you have them, and say how you measured it. Keep estimates clearly approximate and avoid claiming a design change caused a result when production or supplier changes also contributed.

Name tools with context

List CAD and analysis tools you have used, such as SolidWorks or ANSYS Mechanical, alongside the work they supported. Explain whether you modeled, ran simulations, interpreted results, or correlated analysis with testing. Add GD&T, tolerance stackups, and DFM when they reflect hands-on practice; omit tools you have only seen in a demo.

Handle licenses and project files

A Professional Engineer license is not required for every mechanical engineering job. If you hold one, list the state and license designation; do not imply that an FE exam or EIT designation is a PE license. Use a project link only if it is public and approved for sharing, and remove proprietary drawings, customer names, and controlled technical details.

Questions about this role

How long should a senior mechanical engineer resume be?

For about 5 to 10 years of relevant work, two pages is usually enough to show major designs, validation work, production results, tools, and education. Keep older or less relevant details brief. A one-page resume can work if your experience is focused and the role’s requirements are still easy to verify.

Do mechanical engineers need a PE license?

Not always. Many product design and manufacturing roles do not require a Professional Engineer license. Some positions involving public infrastructure, consulting, or engineering work regulated by state law may require one. Requirements vary by state and employer. List a PE only if it is active, and identify the state where you are licensed.

Should I include a portfolio with my resume?

A portfolio can help show your design process, but use only work you are allowed to share. Include brief project summaries, your role, tools, constraints, and outcomes. Do not post confidential drawings, customer information, export-controlled technical data, or employer-owned files. If you cannot share artifacts, describe the work at a high level in the resume.

Can I move into senior mechanical engineering from another engineering field?

Yes, if you can show relevant mechanical design experience and the required technical fundamentals. Emphasize transferable work such as CAD, materials, testing, manufacturing support, or failure analysis, and explain the systems you worked on. Be clear about your individual contribution and avoid presenting adjacent experience as ownership of a full mechanical product lifecycle.
